No Atheists In Foxholes. Or Libertarians In Bank Runs

by Jean-Louis Gassée Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) made and lost chancy bets on long-term bonds. This concerned depositors who in turn worried other depositors, starting a chain reaction, a massive exit of funds. SVB didn’t have enough liquidities, became insolvent and is now in the hands of the FDIC (Federal Deposits Insurance Corporation). Bank runs are an old phenomenon. According to Wikipedia, the first known bank runs go back to the 16th century, followed by the Tulip Manias, the South Sea Bubble, the French Mississippi Company, and many more over the ages. I won’t venture to say bank runs are…

CEOs Writing Three Envelopes

by Jean-Louis Gassée After tens of thousands of layoffs, what can tech company CEOs do? To clarify the title above, let’s return to the start of a serious and fun May 2010 Monday Note tiled Ballmer just opened the Second Envelope: “You know the business lore joke. The departing CEO meets his successor and hands him three envelopes to be opened in…

GenAI: More Netscape Moment Questions

by Jean-Louis Gassée Generative AI does more than entertain and irritate. It also poses serious philosophical and business questions. Late last January I sat down with knowledgeable but healthily skeptical drinking companions (coffee or green tea) to see what they thought of the importance of ChatGPT and, more broadly, Generative…

The Musk Method And Twitter

by Jean-Louis Gassée Of the companies Elon Musk started, two stand out: SpaceX and Tesla. They shook up their respective industries and made him a hero. It’s the company that Musk didn’t create, Twitter, that may be his “bridge too far”. Let's start with a list of Musk’s companies. ChatGPT…

Apple’s So-So Q1 2023

by Jean-Louis Gassée Apple’s quarter after quarter numbers draw much justified attention. Analysis of the numbers is always interesting — and prompts us to look beyond the three months just elapsed. Apple’s numbers for the first quarter of its Fiscal Year 2023 (ending in December 2022) were less than stellar. The official press release points to a financial summary PDF from which I extract this chart:

ChatGPT: Netscape Moment or Nothing Really Original

by Jean-Louis Gassée As the sudden explosion of public interest in ChatGPT continues to excite millions, we ask: Is this the tipping point for machine-driven conversation (and more)? Is ChatGPT the Netscape of our time? In Fortune’s The inside story of ChatGPT: How OpenAI founder Sam Altman built the world’s hottest technology with billions from Microsoft, author Jeremy Kahn helpfully explains OpenAI’s history, structure, financing, and much more — at 6K words, the article covers a lot of territory. …

The ChatGPT Maelstrom

by Jean-Louis Gassée ChatGPT has quickly captured imaginations in ways not seen since the iPhone’s 2007 advent. Today, we take a tentative, random walk thru its rapidly expanding landscape. As I happily settle back at my writing station after a trip to parts of France and Austria, I see a…

Musk Has A Strategy. Perhaps.

by Jean-Louis Gassée Despite the growing consensus that his erratic actions will leave Twitter in bankruptcy or reduced to a fire sale, I’ve allowed myself to presume that Elon Musk has a perverse plan to make Twitter viable. Defending Elon Musk’s recent behavior isn’t an easy position to maintain. It’s hard to disagree with the doomsayers as evidence of Musk’s mercurial management grows by the day. A Musk statement du jour cannot be trusted, he’ll reverse himself in a few weeks, days, or even hours…

ChatGPT: Its Nothing, You Don’t Need It. And We’ll Have It In Six Months.

by Jean-Louis Gassée Seemingly overnight, but not really out of nowhere, ChatGPT has gained fame for making once-nebulous AI concepts accessible to “normal” people. [Apologies: a domain name problem, combined with a mistake of mine, make this Monday Note late.] Before I decode today’s title, let’s take a look at “The state of AI in 2022 — and a half decade in review”, a serious and wide-ranging McKinsey article by Michael…
